Large shrub or small tree, up to 20 ft. tall, young twigs pubescent; branches brown. Leaves opposite, usually simple or imparipinnately compound with only 3 leaflets. Simple leaves petiolate, petiole 1.5-3.5 cm long, pubescent, pulvinate at base; leaf blade 8-20 cm x 4-9 cm, lanceolate, elliptic to ovate-elliptic, margin serrate, apex acute to acuminate, occasionally obtuse, base cuneate; adaxially glabrous, abaxially pubescent, prominently on veins. Compound leaves: petiole 3-4.5 cm long, pulvinate at base; terminal leaflet larger, up to 17 cm x 7 cm, morphology like simple leaves; lateral leaflets smaller, 4.5-12 cm x 2-4.5 cm, morphology like simple leaves but base cuneate or asymmetrical. Flowers bisexual, slightly zygomorphic, pentamerous, hypogynous, yellow, obliquely funnelform, 5-5.5 cm long and 4-4.5 cm across in terminal racemes or panicles; floral axis pubescent. Pedicels articulated at base of flower, 3.5-6 mm long, pubescent; bracts ca. 2.5 mm long, pubescent; bracteoles smaller than bracts, pubescent. Calyx tubular or tubular-campanulate, 6-7 mm long; lobes 5, triangular, erect, acuminate, pubescent, circular glands at base of lobes. Corolla 5-5.5 cm long and 4-4.5 cm across; tube ca. 4 cm long, basal part ca. 1 cm x 0.3 cm narrow cylindrical, upper part expanded up to 1.5 cm wide, glabrous outside, inside 2 longitudinal ridges, pilose; limb slightly 2-lipped, lower lip ca. 4 cm wide, 3-lobed, spreading, upper lip ca. 3 cm wide, 2- lobed, lobes reflexed; all 5 lobes subequal, 1.2-1.8 cm x 1.8-2 cm, obovate, imbricate, apex round or emarginate, pubescent. Stamens 4, included, inserted at base of corolla tube, didynamous, anterior pair larger than the 2 laterals, ca. 16 mm and 13 mm long respectively, base glandular pubescent; staminode small, filiform, 5-6 mm long; anther bithecous, linear-oblong, ca. 3 mm long, apiculate, thecae divaricate and pilose. Disc cupulate, more or less 5-lobed. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary ca. 4 mm long; linear-oblong, glabrous, 2-locular, ovules many on axile placentae; style ca. 2 cm long; stigma 2 lobed, lobes flattened, ovoid, ca. 1.5 mm long. Capsules 12-23 cm x ca. 6 mm, pendulous, linear, compressed, chocolate brown colour, valves 2, leathery with lenticels. Seeds ca. 5 mm x 8 mm, compressed with 2 hyaline membranous wings, wings 8-12 mm broad.
